To make animated GIFs stand out on social media or in DMs, consider adding a filter, effect, or animated sticker on your GIF. Filtered GIFs have an aesthetic vibe, bringing original, high-quality imagery to your multimedia collages. With Kapwing’s built in effects, animations, transitions, and color filters, you can change the design and visuals of your GIF with a few clicks.
Kapwing's online image editor provides dozens of preset filters and precise adjustments that will allow you to tweak the filtered GIF before exporting. You can add animated overlays, combine multiple layers, or filter a single GIF with a transparent background. Once you have the perfect filter, you can do even more with the GIF before you export the finished product like adding text, frames, or animation.
Start by choosing the GIF file that you want to filter and uploading to Kapwing
Open the “Adjust” tool and find the filters tab. Click the options to preview what the filter would look like on your GIF. Use the “Adjust” tab to modify other color settings. Then, click “Done” to return to the main preview.
Click “Export” to get the GIF or MP4 version of the filtered image. Save and share!
Want to tweak the appearance of your GIF? The right filter can transform a GIF from average to bold, from regular to unique, and from normal to hilarious. Add filters to make your animation look more bold, faded, blurred, saturated, or vibrant. These filters may bring out certain hues, refine the lighting, change the saturation or brightness, or apply a vignette around the edges.
Creators can also try Kapwing’s effects to add other animations, transitions, and animated overlay on their GIF. Try the Giphy Wordart plugin to add an animated text ticker, or use the animation library to make your hues rotate. Use a combination of effects and filters to give your GIF sticker a unique look and feel before sending it to a friend or uploading on social media.
It’s also possible to overlay a GIF or animated layer on top of a different image or GIF within Kapwing. Combine animations with each other, making it snow in the desert or adding sparkling lights to a landscape. If you have an image, use our embedded GIF and image search to discover free GIF filters from across the web to layer on your picture. Or, browse YouTube for the green screen video you want and remove the background with Kapwing’s chroma key tool. Kapwing enables you to export a video as a GIF, so no need to convert.
Kapwing’s filter editor uses CSS filters on the frontend to emulate the visual changes in javascript. Then, when users click export, Kapwing burns the GIF file together using client-side processing and FFMPEG. HTML canvas also powers our tech stack.
Kapwing supports all types of image, GIF, and video files. Upload a GIF, WebP, Mp4, PNG, JPEG, icon, or any type of picture. Then, click Export to get the download-able version. In three clicks, you’ll get your filtered GIF to share. In addition to color filters, Kapwing offers audio filters and video effects to support modern creators.
Most GIF editors have a sepia filter that you can apply to make your image more yellow or golden and have lower contrast. Kapwing, for example, has Sepia as a pre-set filter option. Sepia often fades a GIF, making it look older and more historic. Creators can also use sepia to make an animation look like film, VHS, static, or glitch.
If you want to remove the colors out of a GIF to create a black and white animation, you can apply a grayscale filter. Everything in the GIF will become black, white, or a shade of gray. You can still adjust other color settings, like the brightness or contrast of the image, even if it’s been made monochrome. In Kapwing’s filters library, try the “Moose,” “Grayscale,” and “Maxwell” filter options.
Sometimes, you need to combine a GIF with an image or text layer and need to make the GIF transparent or reduce the opacity in a multimedia collage. To reduce the opacity of a GIF filter, upload both layers into a GIF editor, bring the top layer forward, and use the opacity slider to reduce the opacity of the layer.
Kapwing is free to use for teams of any size. We also offer paid plans with additional features, storage, and support.
